Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at garritassiberians@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The main cause of cat allergies in people is FelD-1. It is transferred to the cat's fur by licking and grooming. Then dried saliva and dandruff are spread from the cat hair as small airborne particles into the surrounding environment. Siberians produce less of this protein than other cat breeds. FelD-1 levels vary with each individual cat. The Siberian breed has an overall far-lower level of FelD1 than other cat breeds. Typically people with mild to average cat allergies can comfortably be placed with Siberians and not have an allergic reaction.

Breeders that allow visits to their cattery regularly are putting their kittens at very high risk for fleas, parasites (such as mites), funguses and viruses. Kitten immunity is highly underdeveloped prior to 8 weeks of age and humans can easily transmit, from their clothes or skin, serious illnesses to a cattery. We simply cannot ensure that those visiting us have their animals at home on parasite control medicines, such as Revolution, and that all pets in their home are fully current on vaccines, and they are not carriers of any potential illness. Daily sanitation has to occur in catteries as well as preventive exposure protocols. Just as humans would never ever consider exposing their newborn babies to a wide population, it is the same with young kittens. Furthermore, if one kitten becomes infected, infection rapidly spreads to the entire litter. For this reason, it is highly irresponsible to allow multiple, regular visitors into catteries. Also, our cattery is part of our home. We are not a storefront. This is a private space and we do not feel comfortable allowing strangers in and out of our home on a regular basis, especially in this day and age. We do not accept visitors at all.

We have a few things to say about this. You can read more here.
